This is exactly right. PC is just like the car that can be fixed by you, your dad, that guy down the street, and in drastic cases, any repair shop around. Mac is like the car that requires even the simplest repairs to be done by "certified" repair shops or directly at the dealer, both of whom drive up the price as much as possible.

Is that why I always see the long lines of people needing their Windows computers "cleaned" at Circuit City and Best Buy? If you know what you're doing in UNIX, you can mess with OS X to your heart's content. Mac hardware uses industry-standard parts, and you can swap parts and upgrade as much as you want. About the only thing you *can't* do is buy a mobo and build a (supported) Mac from scratch. It's just the fake Windows "geeks" that think Macs can't be tinkered with.

those people at best buy definitely what they are doing in unix.
and you definitely can't just put any hardware you want in a mac...

I see long lines at CC and BB for returns of everything they sell. There's no line at the service center because that's not how it works.

      But nice story, anyway.

The reason they take their Windows machines to Best Buy to get fixed is because they are fixable... Apples on the other hand require you to dismantle the entire machine, thereby increasing your cost beyond the purchase of a new machine.

Exactly: macs are good for old people and the computer illiterate who don't know how to install/run ad-aware+firefox, and think comet cursor is neat.

@HerbertWest: I don't know wtf your talking about. Macs and PC's are made of essentially the same parts in a lot of cases. Anyways, at least PC users are thinking. That's a lot more than I can say about the Mac users they feature in their commercials.

And that is the single reason why I don't see myself buying a Mac anytime soon. I'm a Linux user myself but OSX (Tiger osx86) is far better than the Windows OS. I don't see why normal users haven't jumped into the Mac bandwagon yet, I mean, I understand why not Linux (the whole DIY factor) but you will not have that on a Mac.

Macs are too expensive for what they are. Plain and simple.

I've just bought a MacBook a month ago and it just bores me rigid. Despite the whole "new shiny toy" thing, it's gathering dust at the bottom of a cardboard box while I use my Ubuntu install all the time. I may get rid of it.

Hmm, built my own just a month ago. But you are right about pre-buits. Only difference is about $1,500 compared to macs.

Depends on what you mean by simple repairs. I've changed the RAM and HDD in my Macbook Pro without problems. It's *extremely* simple in a Macbook, too (a HDD switch can probably be done in, say, 1.5 minutes?).

Too bad you voided any warranty by replacing the hard drive.
