  Start at 0 and count to 9... including 0 that's 10 numbers.
  Now start at 000 and count to 999... that's 1,000 numbers.

  Also to mathematically prove its 1000, instead of simple subtraction you can always multiply 10 x 10 x 10 (or 10^3) for 10 possibilities per place, and 3 places. Just to make sure, in case you can't subtract or need to prove subtraction works.
