Know what that is, ya dumb fuck? Do you know what black body radiation is? do you even know for the goddamn love of god what hawking radiation is? do you know why green is not red? Or why we share (a tentative) 95% of our genes with chimpanzees? This is exactly right. PC is just like the car that can be fixed by you, your dad, that guy down the street, and in drastic cases, any repair shop around. Mac is like the car that requires even the simplest repairs to be done by "certified" repair shops or directly at the dealer, both of whom drive up the price as much as possible.

Is that why I always see the long lines of people needing their Windows computers "cleaned" at Circuit City and Best Buy? If you know what you're doing in UNIX, you can mess with OS X to your heart's content. Mac hardware uses industry-standard parts, and you can swap parts and upgrade as much as you want. About the only thing you *can't* do is buy a mobo and build a (supported) Mac from scratch. It's just the fake Windows "geeks" that think Macs can't be tinkered with.
    • 17 diggs
      JK1150 on 2008-07-20 18:27:36
those people at best buy definitely what they are doing in unix.
and you definitely can't just put any hardware you want in a mac...

I see long lines at CC and BB for returns of everything they sell. There's no line at the service center because that's not how it works.

      But nice story, anyway.

      arnoldez on 2008-07-20 22:48:02
The reason they take their Windows machines to Best Buy to get fixed is because they are fixable... Apples on the other hand require you to dismantle the entire machine, thereby increasing your cost beyond the purchase of a new machine.

@HerbertWest: I don't know wtf your talking about. Macs and PC's are made of essentially the same parts in a lot of cases. Anyways, at least PC users are thinking. That's a lot more than I can say about the Mac users they feature in their commercials.

And that is the single reason why I don't see myself buying a Mac anytime soon. I'm a Linux user myself but OSX (Tiger osx86) is far better than the Windows OS. I don't see why normal users haven't jumped into the Mac bandwagon yet, I mean, I understand why not Linux (the whole DIY factor) but you will not have that on a Mac.

I’ve been taking the train to work for 4 years now. It’s a 45 minute rambling ride in which I usually either read a book, sleep, or grab my laptop loaded up with Ubuntu and get some stuff done. Over time, I’ve collected a few funny remarks I’ve either over heard, or that people have said directly to me. Here are the 10 best.

1. That’s not windows, it’s a Mac! (One teenager to another).
2. Where’s the start button? (Asked directly to me on a train).
3. Random middle manager one: He must be in Marketing, he’s making a new picture! Random middle manager two: I don’t know, look how he’s dressed. (While using gimp).
4. Don’t turn your computer on Bill – that guy can look into it! (two business men).
5. You’ve got to work in IT. (said directly to me).
6. (Whispered)How did he get Vista early? (Two teens).
7. Yeah, I’m surrounded by yuppies, kids, drones and two guys using Linux. (Someone on a cell phone).
8. What the hell is that? (Pointing to my screen -followed by a 15 minute conversation about computers).
9. Can you game on it? (Guy with a Sony VIAO running Vista. He wasn’t impressed by Moria).
10. They stole that spinning cube thing from a Mac! (Two mac users sitting next to me).

"They stole that spinning cube thing from a Mac"
They did, first seen as the fast user switching effect YEARS ago

BurgerPunch is right, but it's hardly the same as using it with virtual desktops.

I remember BeOS using the spinning cube effect as a demo of how powerful it was. It could render a bunch of MPEGS on the surface of a spinning cube in realtime. It was pretty damn remarkable given how slow and crappy computers were at the time.

Jesus Christ, it's a fucking cube. No one gets a Nobel Prize for thinking up a cube with your window manager drawn on the sides.

Or maybe it's 3D-Desktop, which has been around for SIX years, as mentioned above?

@Paranoidmarvin You mean, they don't have a patent on spinning cubes...YET. It's Apple, give them time

The "spinning cube" on OS X was kind of lackluster and not really a big part of the OS. Compiz/Beryl took it several steps further by adding customizeability and combining it with multiple desktops instead of user switching.

Since Apple came out with their (very inferior) multiple desktop system and implied it as their own, I'd say Apple and the Linux community are even.

I never get this fuss about Ubuntu being brown - you can change it! Yet Macs are a horrible battleship grey and no one ever complains that they look like they were designed by John Major, and that you can't change.
